High School Memory by Rick Stam

I loved being in the band my sophomore year and part of my junior year. We had a great trip to California that I will never forget.

I remember the last day of our sophomore year the walls literally being torn down around us. It was like the constructions crew couldn't wait to tear down our historical school.

My greatest memory took place on January 20, 1984 when my dreams of being a rock star were brought to fruition. My band, The Northern Lights, made up of myself, Troy Crawford, Tom Filardo, Scott Brown, and Rick Olivarez (a former Pirate), performed at a talent assembly on the Cyprus stage. My memory, or at least the way I want to remember it, is that we had the crowd in a frenzy as we jammed to Quiet Riot's Metal Health and Lover Boy's Hot Girls in Love. I particularly remember that my bass solo during Metal Health was flawless and drew an exuberant response from the audience. There I was in red spandex pants, a purple sweatshirt and purple bandana tied around not my head but my leg (I'm not sure what kind of fashion statement I was trying to make with that) living my dream for nearly 10 minutes. The drugs, booze, women, and inflated egos eventually lead to the extinguishment of The Northern Lights but it was a great memory for 4 current pirates and 1 former pirate.
